Equine Herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1)

Equid alphaherpesvirus 1, also known as equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1), is part of a family of DNA viruses responsible for EHV, an endemic disease in equines that commonly causes fever, respiratory inflammation, abortion, anorexia, and other symptoms. EHV viruses remain latent within infected horses, with recurrence possible throughout the animal’s life.

Most EHV infections are mild, but the neurological form of EHV, Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy (EHM), is frequently deadly. Most often caused by the D752 strain of EHV-1, EHM infection can cause ataxia, paralysis, and death. There is no treatment for EHM, save for palliative care.

In recent years, EHM outbreaks have occurred in North America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia.

SEQURE EHV-1 Assay

Amplification plot of real EHV-1 virus spiked into a negative equine nasal swab sample, demonstrating the high sensitivity of the SEQURE EHV-1 assay.

Our technology can revolutionize biosecurity at equine events and give peace of mind to owners as they bring their horses home.

Previous outbreaks, such as at the Desert International Horse Park (DIHP) in February 2022, have resulted in losses of tens of millions of dollars to event organizers and participants, to say nothing of the worry, sleepless nights, and lost livestock that comes with an EHV outbreak. With legacy EHV-1 tests taking an entire day, efficient control of outbreaks is impossible.

Learn more about the DIHP outbreak:

With SEQURE, you no longer have to fear that an elevated temperature reading, unrelated to EHV, will force your horses into quarantine alongside EHV-infected animals. Pairing our fast diagnostic platform with the app allows for efficient monitoring and prevention of potential disease outbreaks.
