Streptococcus equi (Strangles)

Strangles, also known as equine distemper, is an upper respiratory infection caused by Streptococcus equi, a bacterium in the same genus as those which cause strep throat in humans. Symptoms typically begin with fever, then proceed to lethargy, loss of appetite, swollen and abscessed lymph nodes in the throat and under the jaw, as well as a thick, yellow discharge from the nose. Horses may also have trouble swallowing and breathing, and in severe cases can die of asphyxiation.
